Brutal war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has claimed more than five million lives.

That’s shocking—but the good news is that we can do something about it.

The conflict in the Congo is being fueled and financed by the world’s appetite for minerals.

Resources that are mined illegally end up in products we all use—from cellphones to tin cans to jet engines. The proceeds fund warring factions that use violence, including sexual violence, to advance their political goals.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

If we can stop using conflict minerals in products here, we can stop the war there.

We, the undersigned residents of Canada, recognize the following:

  • The war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has caused over 5 million deaths and incredible suffering.
  • The war is financed by the illegally mined minerals that end up in many of our products.
  • We can stop the war by stopping these conflict minerals from entering our markets.

Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada to adopt the NDP’s Conflict Minerals Act, which will help end the trade in conflict minerals.
