In the dying days of the Sri Lankan civil war, the military cornered thousands of Tamil civilians along with opposing fighters.

The area was shelled, and thousands of civilians were killed as the international community looked away.

The United Nations Panel of Experts Report revealed: “there are credible allegations, which if proven, indicate that a wide range of serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law were committed...some of which amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The government of Sri Lanka has so far rejected global calls for accountability. Yet Stephen Harper is preparing to send a Canadian delegation to Commonwealth meetings to be hosted by Sri Lanka in November.

Canada must not attend these meetings unless Sri Lanka changes course.

We the undersigned residents of Canada recognize the following:

  • Sri Lanka refuses to comply with United Nations calls for an independent investigation into allegations of war crimes.
  • Sending a Canadian delegation to the Commonwealth meetings in Sri Lanka would reward Sri Lanka’s lack of accountability.
  • The Conservative government refuses to make a clear commitment that it would not attend the Commonwealth meetings unless Sri Lanka complies with the UN recommendations.

Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada to boycott November’s Commonwealth meetings hosted by Sri Lanka—until that government allows an independent investigation into allegations of war crimes.
